OpenAI, Oracle and SoftBank to Build Five New AI Data Centers as Part of $500 Billion Stargate Project

OpenAI, Oracle and SoftBank announced plans to establish five new artificial intelligence data centers in the United States under their ambitious Stargate initiative. Three of the sites will be built in partnership with Oracle in Texas, New Mexico while two others will be developed with SoftBank in Ohio and Texas. Once completed, the project is expected to deliver a total capacity of 10 gigawatts and attract up to $500 billion in investment.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman framed the move by stating, “AI can only fulfill its promise if we build the compute to power it.” The expansion is projected to create around 25,000 onsite jobs. Nvidia has also pledged to invest up to $100 billion in OpenAI and provide the advanced chips required to run the new facilities.

U.S. President Donald Trump formally launched the Stargate project earlier this year by convening top technology executives at the White House. Backed by Microsoft, OpenAI is channeling billions into massive data centers to sustain generative AI platforms like ChatGPT and Copilot. With defense applications growing and China racing to catch up, artificial intelligence has become a central priority for both Washington and the global tech industry.
