Children’s Mental Health Concerns Rise Among Parents

What do parents expect from schools in terms of support for their children’s mental health? Primarily, they expect their children to feel safe. According to the latest data from Action for Healthy Kids, parents are voicing various concerns regarding their children’s mental health. A survey conducted in December 2023 with approximately 1,000 parents of children in K-12 schools reveals that parents are worried about their children experiencing stress and racism at school.

Parents seek education and tools to discuss issues impacting their children’s well-being. In response, Action for Healthy Kids is developing guides for parents on topics such as general mental health, racism, body positivity, setting body boundaries, and suicide prevention.

The majority of surveyed parents agree that a school where their child feels a sense of belonging is crucial for supporting students’ mental health. Nearly 70% of parents report that their child has at least one trusted adult at school. Additionally, 88% believe a warm classroom environment would help their child feel safe and supported. Parents also want teachers to foster positive relationships among students.

Furthermore, 58% of Black parents and 45% of Hispanic parents are concerned about their child experiencing racism at school. Murphy notes that the increased discussion about racism during the pandemic and following the George Floyd incident has raised awareness of these issues in educational institutions, which aligns with broader societal conversations.

In conclusion, parents’ concerns about their children’s mental health underscore the need for greater support and awareness in schools. The demand for education and guidance to ensure children feel safe and supported highlights the importance of schools taking proactive steps in this direction.
