The Opportunities and Risks of TikTok Usage Among Teachers

A study conducted by Elon University, Northern Arizona University, and Redlands University reveals that teachers are gaining ideas for new classroom practices on TikTok, while on the other hand, they lack sufficient knowledge about privacy policies and the use of the application.

According to the research, teachers are using TikTok for educational purposes and spending an average of two hours a day on the platform. The majority of educators find the content helpful in generating new ideas and improving classroom management techniques. However, it is worth noting that only a small proportion of teachers use TikTok to connect directly with their students.

This research shows that teachers may benefit from more information about TikTok’s privacy policies and their school’s rules for using the platform. It is concerning that 53% of teachers are unaware of school policies, and almost two-thirds do not know what happens to their personal information on the platform.

However, it is encouraging to see that teachers are present on TikTok, which can help them understand youth culture and find innovative ways to engage their students. While some have expressed concern about the platform’s tendency to depict teaching as a ‘performance’, research findings demonstrate its potential benefits.

However, I want to assure educators that the platform can be used for both educational and personal enrichment purposes. It is important for teachers and school administrators to be aware of the platform’s usage and keep social media policies up to date. TikTok provides teachers with a unique opportunity to connect with their students beyond the classroom. As responsible educators, it is crucial that we use this innovative tool in a thoughtful and effective manner.
