Google DeepMind Opens a New AI Laboratory in Singapore
Google DeepMind is expanding its research presence in the region by opening a new artificial intelligence laboratory in Singapore. The laboratory will focus on localization research aimed at improving large language models’ ability to understand Southeast Asian languages and cultural contexts. Through collaborative projects with local institutions, the team aims to strengthen Gemini’s reasoning capabilities and develop solutions to global challenges, including energy, health, and climate change.
The company highlights that Singapore’s innovative environment and strategic location provide a favorable foundation for AI research. Indeed, Singapore is already among the preferred hubs for many major technology companies seeking to expand their artificial intelligence research and development activities in the region.
In addition, DeepMind plans to develop models that can more accurately interpret culturally meaningful visual and linguistic cues. Having more than doubled its investments in the Asia-Pacific region, the company aims to support the responsible and inclusive development of AI through collaboration with researchers and engineers across the public sector, private industry, and academia.
