Institute Social's new research seeks to answer the question, 'How is digitalization transforming intra-family communication?'

The new research of Institute Social, titled "Transformation of the Family in the Digital Age: New Generation Bonds and Dynamics," has been released. The presentation program of the research was held on May 30th at Institute Social.

Ipek Coşkun Armağan, the General Coordinator of Institute Social, stated, "It is clear that we need to inquire into the use of digital tools to make understandable, visible, and manageable the relationship we establish with technology and the resulting social change." She emphasized that families are facing "unprecedented intergenerational communication, awareness, and attitude differences," highlighting that "parents cannot provide good digital mediation, guidance, and support to their own children because digital tools and access were not as widespread in their childhood." Armağan also mentioned that one of the aims of the research is to develop recommendations for public policies related to the issue.

Selçuk Aydın, the Coordinator of Social Research at Institute Social, stated that the research aims to understand the experiences of digitalization, especially between parents and children, and to analyze the differentiated and shared dynamics. He mentioned that they listened to and observed families with different demographic characteristics at their homes during the fieldwork and that the research is longitudinally planned and will be repeated every two years. Aydın added that the research involved simultaneous interviews with children aged 13-25 and their parents, as well as a roundtable meeting and workshop with experts from different professional groups.

Sociologist Nursen Tekgöz, one of the researchers, highlighted the differences in digital skills, communication, and attitudes between generations when discussing the results, expressing that the values, norms, functions, and operation of the family have undergone a radical transformation. However, Tekgöz also noted that the most striking result of the research is that the institution of the family still maintains itself as a preservative structure. While indicating that the family has turned into an area of struggle with new roles, responsibilities, and tensions, Tekgöz also observed that family members still maintain their awareness of the importance of "being together."
