Francis Su on Mathematics For Human Flourishing

On February 13, Institute Social hosted award-winning mathematician and educator Prof. Francis Su, for a webinar in its Global Reflections series, titled “Building Virtues, Not Just Skills: Mathematics For Human Flourishing”. The session opened with Prof. Francis Su emphasizing that mathematics is not merely a field of skill but a discipline that fosters fundamental human virtues. He explained how mathematics shapes individuals thinking habits, attitudes, and character, highlighting the crucial role of education in this process.

Prof. Su stated that mathematics is a field that fulfills fundamental human desires and argued that mathematical thinking should go beyond rote memorization and limited math operations. He noted that individuals who may not have recognized the beauty of mathematics in the past could develop a deeper appreciation for the discipline with the right teaching approaches. Stating that “Mathematics education is not a transaction but a transformation,” he stressed that mathematics plays a critical role not only in securing good jobs or achieving exam success but also in enhancing individuals’ mental flexibility and perseverance.

Explaining that mathematical problem-solving requires patience and determination, which are qualities that shape a person’s character, Prof. Su emphasized that mathematics is not just a theoretical field but also a discipline that encourages strategic thinking and creativity. “If you enrich your work with skills, artificial intelligence is not a threat. Strategic thinking, interpretative ability, and creativity are indispensable human virtues,” he remarked, underlining the critical role of mathematical thinking in the modern world.

Prof.  Su emphasized that mathematics is not reserved for a selected group of people, asserting, “Everyone can be a math person, there is no such thing as ‘I don’t understand math.’ The key is to adopt the right learning approach and shift perceptions about mathematics.” He pointed out the significant role of teachers and parents in this regard, stressing that parents anxieties about mathematics can often be transferred to their children.

Believing that mathematics education is often too focused on skills, Prof. Su argued that this approach is insufficient. “Mathematics education should not be confined to memorizing formulas for factoring quadratic equations. It should also cultivate virtues such as perseverance in problem solving, curiosity, creativity, and an appreciation for mathematical beauty. The purpose of mathematics extends beyond narrow career preparation, it contributes to the holistic development of individuals as human beings,” he stated, highlighting the importance of a comprehensive approach to mathematics education.

During the discussion, participants engaged in an in depth conversation about the significance of mathematics for individuals and society. Prof. Su emphasized the necessity of presenting mathematics with a more inclusive approach within the education system, stressing that quality mathematics education should be designed to contribute to both the intellectual and ethical development of individuals.
